In Small Ways

"Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness." (Psalm 150:2 NIV)

We have heard numerous times before, and it has often been repeated in these devotionals, that God is all-powerful. God is great, and He expresses His greatness and power. We see and hear of God's mighty power in the more great and obvious ways, ways that we consider grand. But we forget, we often take for granted, that God's power often comes through and shows itself to us in small, gentle, tender ways.

God's most significant character trait is love. This means that He extends His love to all of us, regardless of who we are, where we are, or what may be going on in our lives this moment. God created the world, and He created us, precisely so He could have someone to show His love to and share His life with. He is kind to every one of us, and shows His kindness by providing us with everything we need, reminding us that we are loved, and sending people to show love and kindness to us. He cares for us, and so He is always looking out for our best interest and basic needs. He accepts us as we are, and shows us that He loves and accepts us by being gentle towards us.

God's strongest inclination is gentleness. He is gentle in His daily interactions with us, showing His love and care in small yet significant ways. He shares His love with us in small ways which we may not recognize right away, but which certainly make a large difference. He is tender towards all people, showing them, and us, patience, and gently guiding us through each day. He is always willing to forgive us whenever we hurt ourselves or others, and He is always willing to show us how to show the same love and kindness to others He shows us daily. God is indeed all-powerful, and His power is expressed in His love and gentleness.

Dear God, thank you for all the small, gentle ways in which your power comes to help and save me each day. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Still Reaching Out " For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,  neither the present nor the future,  nor any powers,   neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God  that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39 NIV) It finally happened. On Sunday afternoon, here in Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine issued a Stay-At-Home Order, which went into effect at midnight last Monday night. What does it mean? Well, simply that now we have to remain even more separated than ever before. We can leave our homes to care for relatives, go shopping, engage in outdoor activities, and that's essentially all. The biggest challenge is going to be remaining connected to each other - which, actually, is much of the reason this devotional blog exists: as a way to keep connected. Even though technology can keep us connected with each other, especially by telephone and video chat, it's st...

Still Connected "These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God, under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy  and praise among the festive throng." (Psalm 42:4 NIV) One of the hardest adjustments many of us have had to make has been our churches closing. Worship services have stopped for at least the last couple of weeks all over the country, and this has affected both small and large churches. It has been hard having to stay home, seemingly disconnected from our friends and support at our churches, and having our worship routines seemingly disrupted. Yet the good news is that God is with us, any time, any where. He is not confined to one location, building, time of day, or day of the week. He is with us at every moment, and does not take a break from watching over us, because He is all-powerful. He is almighty and all-seeing, so He is able to be everywhere at once, and handle everything for every per...
